The Applied Research Center (ARC) is a collaborative enterprise by Old Dominion University, Jefferson Lab, the College of William & Mary, Christopher Newport University and Norfolk State University. The shared objective is to promote innovative, high-tech solutions for private industries and stimulate the economy in the local Hampton Roads area and Commonwealth of Virginia.
ODU's mission at ARC is directed towards linking high-tech industries with leading edge research, development, technology transfer and educational outreach programs. Our unique expertise in laser, optoelectronics, microelectronics, materials science and engineering is available to industries for the best strategic solutions to challenging technology problems.
ODU's Engineering faculty and researchers share this $18 million, seven-story, 122,000 square foot ARC complex with high-tech business start-ups, a venture capital firm, the other participating universities, and the business support services like Virginia's Center for Innovative Technology, the Hampton Roads Technology Council and the Technology Application Center. Today's high-tech solutions need interdisciplinary approach and the faculty at ODU ARC has that diverse expertise in electrical and mechanical engineering, manufacturing technology, physics, chemistry and material science. The ODU center attracts visiting faculty and research scholars from leading institutions around the world. ODU ARC also offers an interdisciplinary academic program in materials science and engineering through the College of Engineering and Technology.
