Engineers Week Open House 2005

Contest Details

Middle and High School Students: Make plans to compete in our Engineers Week Open House 2005 contests! See below for complete details.

 

Electric Boat ( COMPLETE RULES ) - Participants will use their ingenuity to craft a boat from their own design. Each participant will be judged on how long it takes his/her boat to traverse the distance of a channel (approx. 10 feet). The boat with the fastest time will win.
Baby Baja ( COMPLETE RULES ) - The Baby Baja Rally is a competition that challenges middle and high school students individually or as a team to build a miniature all-terrain vehicle capable of traversing sand dunes, water,and logs. This competition is intended to reward imagination, ingenuity, and teamwork.

Egg Drop ( COMPLETE RULES ) - Construct an apparatus that will allow an uncooked egg to survive a 25-foot free fall intact. The design of the apparatus should emphasize the mechanical principles of energy absorption.

Electromagnetic Launcher ( COMPLETE RULES ) - Design and construct an electromagnetic launcher to launch a piece of a paper clip as far as possible.
Engenuity: The Engineering and Technology Quiz Game -Team up with other students to compete in this game show like contest that will test your knowledge of science, engineering and technology. Don’t have a team? Don’t worry. Teams will be formed on the day of the contest from all registrants.
Ping Pong Ball Hauling Derby ( COMPLETE RULES )* - In this team contest participants will design and construct an autonomous vehicle that will transport ping pong balls down a table.

Model Span Bridge( COMPLETE RULES )** - The object of this contest is to construct a 12-inch-long model bridge from a given amount of balsa wood. This model will be tested to destruction to determine its load-carrying capacity as related to its weight when subjected to a single loading

 

Mousetrap Car Design ( COMPLETE RULES ) - Participants will design and build a vehicle powered solely by a mousetrap. Each entry will be judged on a variety of design and performance related criteria

Each contest requires an entry fee of $1.00, except when noted in the contest rules. The kit for the Model Span Bridge contest costs $4.00. Electromagnetic launcher kit costs $5.00. Groups participating in a contest must pay an entry fee for each design submitted. Make checks payable to "Old Dominion University."
