How does that digital clock work?

Have you ever wondered how that digital clock works? Would
like to see how? In this hands on experiment we will discuss binary numbers and the binary count pattern.

Participants will then be shown how to wire a CD4040 counter chip (approx. 6-8 wires).

Then you can verify your results with a pushbutton switch. The output will be displayed on a light emitting diodes (LEDs).

How Water is Cleaned

Water in lakes, rivers and swamps often contains impurities that make it look and smell bad. The water may also contain bacteria and other impurities that can cause disease. Consequently, water from surface sources must be "cleaned" before it can be consumed by people. Water treatment plants typically clean water by taking it through the following process: aeration, coagulation, sedimentation, filtration and disinfections. This experiment will demonstrate the properties for the first four processes. We will aerate water, coagulate (chemically "stick" dirt and suspended particles together), show sedimentation and filter the particles out of the water.

FIRST Robotics Competition

FIRST, or For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology, is an organization that is developing ways to excite students about engineering and technology. The FIRST Robotics Competition challenges teams of young people and their mentors to solve a common problem in a six-week timeframe using a standard "kit of parts" and a common set of rules. Teams build robots from the parts and enter them in a series of competitions. FIRST teams are rewarded for excellence in design, demonstrated team spirit, gracious professionalism and maturity, and ability to overcome obstacles. Come and meet the ODU FIRST Robotics Competition teams. They will demonstrate their robots for you and tell you how you can be involved in the competition next year.

Engineering At Mary Kay Cosmetics

Come see how engineers play a role in the beauty industry. Many of the 42 packaging lines and several pieces of processing machinery were engineered and built by the Mary Kay engineers, mechanics and machinists. Most packaging lines are capable of running many different products, with some lines capable of up to eight products. During a typical 10-hour shift, production of up to 55,000 units can be filled on a single line.
