From Ken Stepka's address to the December 2001 graduating class: Please dedicate your engineering talents to a higher order. I have recited the Engineer's Creed of the National Society of Professional Engineers, which dedicates professional knowledge and skill to the achievement and betterment of human welfare, many times in the past 27 years and it never fails to renew my commitment to my profession. I hope that you have the good fortune to enjoy the first 27 years of your careers as much as I have enjoyed mine, for it is a marvelous profession into which you enter. Good luck as you go forward into your careers as engineers!

When I was an engineering student at Old Dominion, we had to all take the same "core" curriculum. This meant, for example, that as an Electrical Engineering major, I took thermodynamics and "power" courses with the Mechanical Engineering majors. This led me to become aquatinted with Dr. Bob Ash and Dr. Sid Roberts. They were, and still are, both excellent professors who exposed me to more rigorous versions of these courses than might have otherwise been the case. It has been a pleasure to remain acquainted with them both during the years since I graduated. |
