Scholarships for Study in the Field of Marine Engineering & Marine Engineering Technology

Old Dominion University's focus in Marine Engineering is on shipbuilding and repair operations for small and fast vessels in shallow water.  The new marine engineer must cross multi-disciplinary boundaries.

Scholarship and Assistantship Opportunities

Through the National Science Foundation's S-STEM Grant and matching funds from Old Dominion University, the Frank Batten College of Engineering has $1 million available to award to  undergraduate and graduate degree-seeking students studying in the area of Marine Engineering or  Marine Engineering Technology.

Students majoring in the following fields qualify if their intended course of study and/or research pertains to Marine Engineering or Marine Engineering Technology:

  • Aerospace Engineering
  • Civil and Environmental Engineering
  • Electrical and Computer Engineering
  • Engineering Management and Systems Engineering
  • Engineering Technology
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Modeling and Simulation Engineering

Recipient Requirements

To qualify for a Marine Engineering scholarship or assistantship award, a student must:

  • be a U.S. citizen or have permanent resident status
  • demonstrate financial need
  • meet the minimum grade point average (GPA) requirement
    • Undergraduate applicants (junior or senior status) - 2.7 GPA or above
    • Graduate applicants :-
      • Master's level - 3.25 GPA or above
      • Ph.D. level - 3.5 GPA or above
  • possess a desire to work in the Marine Engineering or Marine Engineering Technology field

Benefits of Selection

Recipients of a Marine Engineering scholarship/assistantship award will receive several benefits:

  • Undergraduate scholarship of up to $7,000/year
  • MS/Ph.D scholarships and assistantships of up to $37,000 per year
  • Mentoring from faculty and industry partners
  • Increased employment opportunities
  • Increased research opportunities

Application Process

Applications are accepted during the Spring semester. Completed applications must be received by the specified application deadline for consideration.

To apply for a Marine Engineering scholarship or assistantship award, a student must:

  1. apply for financial aid by completing the Federal Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
  2. apply for admission to Old Dominion University or be a currently enrolled student
  3. declare their major in an Engineering discipline
  4. submit a completed Marine Engineering Scholarship/Assistantship Application
