Elkin is a doctoral student in the Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Department at Old Dominion University, Norfolk, Virginia.  He serves as a graduate research assistant for the same department. He received his B.S. in Industrial Engineering (1997) and Master of Sciences in Systems Engineering (2000) from the Universidad Nacional de Colombia (MedellÃÆ'­n). Masters Thesis: A Genetic Algorithm with Random Keys Approach for the Job Shop Scheduling Problem.

His current research interests are focused on the application of Artificial Intelligence tools such as Genetic Algorithms and Tabu Search, among others, for solving scheduling problems, when unexpected events happen in the shop environments (rescheduling).

Prior to joining the PhD Program, he has had experience in the development of information systems in different organizations. He has been a consultant in the area of scheduling for manufacturing companies and professor in the Industrial Engineering program at the Universidad Nacional de Colombia.
